Chicago Road Trip!

As Jessi mentioned, we headed to Chicago for She & Him for a birthday weekend. My best friend in the whole wide world, Kim, lives in Chicago so I was so excited I couldn’t sleep for days. I felt like when I was 12 and would toss and turn thinking about rollercoasters the night before going to Six Flags. I’m happy to report the weekend lived up to my sleepless nights!

Kim knows that when I visit I have to stop at my two favorite vintage shops, Kokorokoko and Shangri-La Vintage. They did not disappoint! Jessi found out about the Urban Outfitters Outlet store on Clark and let’s just say we didn’t want to leave.

For the concert I found my inner (outer?) Zooey and wore this Dear Creatures dress Joe bought me for painting the kitchen. For accessories, I just kept adding what I bought to the ensemble. When Kim (or was it Jessi?) pointed out this amazing zebra mural I knew it was perfect for my outfit! I kind of blend right in, don’t I?

Chicago highlights included: Uber cab, playing board games with Jessi, John and Kim the first night, shopping and drinking beer, the concert, Vernon and the Ethiopian Bread Debacle, Jessi trying to get on the L, getting bitten all night by a lovely little demon cat named Joey, and catching up with Miss Kim. So, basically every minute! And I thought turning 31 would be oh so boring. . .

Little Kitten, Big City

There’s almost nothing I love more than taking a few days off of regular life for a good Midwestern road trip! Typically John and I will head to Minneapolis, Omaha or Kansas City for a fun few days away. But this time we ventured a little further to… Chicago! I haven’t spent much time in Chicago in my adult life, so it was fun to explore the city with my honey. Not to mention Marlena and her hubs were there too, which made for an extra fun time! We saw Camera Obscura and She & Him and got to hang with old friends. To celebrate John’s birthday (and Marlena’s too!) we went shopping, ate tons of good food* and basically had a spectacular time.

*good food includes cream cheese stuffed red velvet French toast and mac and cheese grilled cheese….. Heaven!!!

I got this woodland creature tank at the Urban Outfitters outlet store in Chicago. I’d had never been to an OU outlet before, and it was a true treat! So much stuff for so cheap. I mean, I got a fox tail for my phone for fifty cents…. (See our iPhone photos post to see the tail in action.)

I’ve basically been living in these high waisted shorts this summer. The denim is stretchy but still durable and so so comfortable.
Mar and I bought complementary Twin Peaks Laura Palmer rings, which is probably my favorite purchase from the trip. Early on in our relationship we bonded over watching Twin Peaks in her dorm room, so buying matching rings seems appropriate.

All in all such a fun trip!!

Life through the eyes of our iPhones: Chicago edition

It’s Chicago trip week here on the blog! A few weeks ago we headed to Chicago for my birthday weekend and John’s birthday weekend (that’s Jessi’s fiance). We had a blast and decided to kick the week off with some favorite pics we took.

Elevator fun! | We brought our own straws to the bar!

80/35 Weekend

I look forward to 80/35 every year. It’s Des Moines’ best music festival, and it’s within walking distance to my house. Kitties, I had the BEST weekend! Our good friends Paul and Vanessa were in town from Portland, my little brother came from Missouri, and then being surrounded by all my favorite Des Moines people is always a treat.

Highlights of Day 1 included Charlie dancing his little ass off to Yeasayer, being blown away by David Byrne + St. Vincent, eating amazing gyros, Little Mermaid memories, and fun shots at the Lift.

I had put more energy into thinking about Saturday’s outfit than Friday’s, so I actually threw this on last minute. I just got this maxi dress from our Chicago trip and it’s insanely comfortable. I added these red shell earrings to help add a little patriotism to the festive weekend.

You’ll find our photos a little lacking on quality this week. It’s a good thing we’re not always half drunk when we do these pics!

Day 2 I found myself shedding the high-waisted jean shorts I was going to wear because they were too hot and uncomfortable. I feel like I had a pretty quintessential festival outfit on anyway:  the flower crown, the crop top, the vest . . .  I just went for it.

Day 2 highlights: Wavves, amazing crab rangoon, trying to rap along with Wu Tang Clan, after party at our house, my decisively on point imitation of a basement cricket.

Festival Fashion

80/35 marks the end of one of my favorite times of the year. I just love summer and June is always so jam packed for me. By the time 80/35 rolls around I’m exhausted but have just enough in me to power through the weekend, resulting in a spectacular time. I got to dance with some lovely friends, eat awesome festival food, hang out with my brother, and even hang in the VIP area thanks to my man!

I often start planning my 80/35 outfits weeks in advance, anticipating how the weather will be and what will be comfortable and cute enough to run around all day in. I think I found two solid winners this year!

On day one I enjoyed a little bit of red bull and peach vodka from the VIP area for some energy- yum yum!
You may remember this top from an earlier post. I got it around my birthday, and because it’s a crop top it can be hard for me to pull off. I decided to pair it with a strapless dress, mixing patterns as I please!
I got these Worishofer sandals recently, and they are dream-come-true shoes. They are so, so, SO comfortable! Like walking on air, really.
I decided to go with a smaller purse than usual this year, but you can see I managed to pack in the essentials: bottled water, sunscreen, wallet and phone. In years past I’ve brought a jacket, umbrella and even extra shoes (which actually came in handy when a friend broke her sandals!) but this year I wanted to travel more lightly, and I still made it through okay.

As we were walking down to the festival I took a spill on the sidewalk and busted up my knee and ankle. Luckily I wasn’t hurt badly enough to impede on the fun, but you can definitely see some of my battle wounds in these pics. Ow!

For my second day outfit I picked another strapless dress, but since I’m not always super comfortable going strapless I safety pinned this scarf to my dress to turn it into a halter. That way I didn’t have to spend the entire day making sure my dress was in place. And it worked out beautifully. Success!
I got these sandals recently at Hill Vintage and really love them. I hadn’t even worn them before, so I was definitely risking comfort since I wasn’t completely sure how comfy they would be. But they’re slightly big on me, which helped, and they got me through the day purrrrfectly!
Since this all took place July 4th weekend I wanted to continue the red, white and blue theme, hence the red belt. I love getting super into holidays and the Fourth of July is no exception! BBQ and fireworks… Sign me up!

All in all, this years festival was majorly successful. Highlights included David Byrne and St. Vincent, Deehunter, Wavves, Yeasayer, and I admit, I even got into Wu-Tang a bit with Marlena.
And now I’m gonna focus more on going to the pool, hanging out with my kitties, catching up on some summer reading and breathe a little. Ahhhhhhh. See ya next year, 80/35!

DIY: Embellished Sunnies

We’ve been seeing a lot of embellished sunglasses all over the place, usually with flowers (like this one, over at The Student Wardrobe). Today we’re bringing you our own version of the trend, using jewelry!

Chain necklace
Glue gun & glue
Wire cutter/good scissors

Oh, the endless possibilities we can accomplish with a $4 glue gun! This is so easy: just remove the earring backs with a wire cutter, then glue the earrings in place! We really liked how the necklace chain wrapped around the lenses, too. Just glue along the edge and work the chain around, then where the chain ends we added each earring. Have fun with the placement; we did on the top corners, on the side, and the bottom. Be sure and clean off the little glue strings that inevitably get on the lenses.

If you decide to put your earrings on the side, make sure you can open and close your sunglasses when you decide your placement.
Unfortunately, Jessi and I both experienced the casualty of these glasses when we threw them in our purses. The earrings popped off pretty easily, so make sure to handle with care!

Have fun and get creative!

Street Style: 80/35

We had soooo much fun this past weekend at the 80/35 music festival, and there were so many cute ladies that we had to stop and take their pic for our first ever Street Style post. A lot of our darling friends made the cut, but they were just too adorable and festive not to include!

Vanessa | Alecia | Emily

Jess | Erin | Z

Anna | Jessi | Berkleigh

Aren’t they all too cute?! We’ll post our outfits for the 2-day event later on this week, so check back!
