Pumpkin Patch Party

Hi Kitties!

So technically it’s not my turn for an outfit post, but my lovely co-captain blog heroine Jessi is gone away on her honeymoon! That’s right: the wedding was last weekend and now she’s living it up with her new husband for the week. Bonus perk for being the maid of honor: I got the leftover macaroons since they couldn’t take them along! Anyway, look for a couple fun posts to come all about the Best Wedding Ever; for now, though, it’s just little ol’ me at an apple orchard/pumpkin patch:

Charlie, Joe and I took a little day trip up north to Center Grove Orchard a couple weekends ago. I’ve been to probably 3 others over the years and this one is the best. Although maybe I only say that because we now have a little crazy boy running around to make it more fun. He fed goats, pointed at pigs, road a little tractor, jumped in a pool of corn, and picked out two little Charlie-sized pumpkins to take home.

I’ve wanted to put a sweater over this dress since I bought it back in the spring, but could never find a sweater that didn’t just add bulk to my ensemble. I think we have a winner! I’ve had this unicorn sweater since college; I distinctly remember spilling red wine on it while watching Wet Hot American Summer on fall break in fact. Oh the memories! Luckily that wine came out and I can still wear this beauty years later.

We’ve had a super busy couple of weeks! In addition to the Big Wedding, Charlie turned two on Tuesday (Twosday?) so Joe and I threw him a little Glow-in-the-Dark Birthday Party with just the three of us. We had his favorite foods for dinner (shells & cheese, pickles, and blueberries in Rice Krispies), opened some gifts, played with glow sticks, and now he’s been happily going to bed with a different race car every night.

DIY: Confetti Hearts!

photo

For Jessi’s wedding, we agreed that confetti would be so fun to throw after the ceremony. I searched high and low for a fun way to hold the little morsels. This post on Ruche’s blog was perfect because guests could just rip open the little hearts when they’re ready and throw. I didn’t want to put as much effort into it as that post, though, so without further ado, here’s my super easy way of making confetti hearts!

SUPPLIES
scrap paper
vellum paper (I got this polka dotted type at Michaels)
pen
scissors
glue pen (Mine is this one from Martha Stewart’s line)
confetti (I just used a hole punch + construction paper. It’s time consuming; I suggest buying!)

steps2-3

steps4-5

DIRECTIONS
1. Make a heart template by drawing a heart and cutting it out on a separate piece of paper. I used a green piece of construction paper.
2. Place your heart on the vellum and cut your hearts out. I didn’t trace around the template because I didn’t want any sort of pen mark to show since it’s transparent.
3. Using the glue pen, draw around each heart edge, leaving part of it unglued so you can put in the confetti.
4. Place another heart on top of the glued heart.
5. To put the confetti in the heart, I found it useful to stick a finger or a pencil or something in the heart to sort of balloon it out a bit. Then just dump in the confetti!
6. Glue the seam shut. Repeat!

TIPS
Make your hearts pretty large, otherwise you won’t be able to stick much confetti in each one. I’d suggest about 8 hearts per 12 x 12 sheet of vellum. The hearts shown here aren’t that big but I wish they were!
Don’t overstuff your heart or the seams will start bustin’ out and it’s pretty annoying.
I also tried a glue stick and scrapbook adhesive. The glue pen worked the best; if you have a steady hand and more patience than me a glue gun would work.

I have to admit that in the end, we are using these little hearts as decoration on the dessert table instead because a) they are cute without ripping them open and b) I ran out of time to make enough for all the confetti we had!

Iowa City Fun Times

Jessi and I made an itty bitty trip to Iowa City a couple weekends ago. I say itty bitty because we were there about an hour, BUT, that was okay, because the better part of our afternoon was spent at a lovely bridal shower for Ms. Jessi! Like Jessi mentioned in her last post, I too have a love for White Rabbit and this lovely city! I mean, where else can you stand on Iowa Street in Iowa CIty in the state of Iowa? Nowhere!

Since we were celebrating Jessi, I decided to wear this pretty red silk dress that Jessi bought me a couple holidays ago. It’s a little on the short side but paired with these black tights it just doesn’t matter! And the little ruffles on the shoulder…. love.

I bought these boots last spring and they are getting some real air play this season. Perfect color and super comfy… I also found this giant heart headband I made that I had lost.

I just got back from Kansas City, which was a weekend of super fun times with the family. We celebrated Charlie’s 2nd birthday a little early, and since we had an Elmo theme we thought: why wouldn’t he wear his Elmo Halloween costume during his party? So darling, kitties!

Hope you’re having a lovely week!

I Heart Iowa City

And here we have another one of my favorite stores of all time, which you can find nearby in Iowa City. White Rabbit is a real love of mine and has been for a few years. They sell locally handmade goods as well as re-worked vintage clothes. On this particular shopping trip I picked up a few sweaters (because you can never have enough), as well as a bad ass, high-waisted, acid washed, knee length denim skirt. That’s a mouthful!

But this dress. This dress! Boyfriend gifted it to me for my 6 months past 30th birthday. It’s Dear Creatures and I love it (obvi.) And to be clear, I’ve never been big on brand names, although I have been real proud to sport the Lee tag on the aforementioned denim skirt… But I do love Dear Creatures, and that’s for the simple fact that they make the cutest damn dresses. Period. The end.

This dress is a real trickster, most people think it’s a skirt and separate top, but surprise… It’s a dress! It’s got mint, it’s got polka dots, it’s got pockets, it’s practically perfect as any good birthday dress should be.

You may or may not have noticed, but this belt is a major outfit staple for me. I thrifted it from who knows where and it’s here to stay. I’ve punched extra holes in the leather to make it more versatile, and even sent it through the sewing machine when it came unstitched from behind. Me and this belt, we’re in it for the long haul, so get used to it!

Bonus: you can peak into my shopping bag and get just a taste of my lovely purchases from White Rabbit. So enjoy!
