Spring in my step (get it?)

I feel like a bear coming out of his stanky old cave after 5 months. I mean, I was here all along, but I was getting pretty cranky about it. The type of cranky that has totally given up on wearing my winter coat; not because it isn’t needed, but because I am just so sick of the thing. And just shedding that giant black bulk has given me a brighter perspective, even if the nice spring days seem to be once every 5 days instead of every day.

This is an easy weekend outfit for me. It’s comfortable yet still stylish, two things I rarely put together. I have never really cared about comfort too much, to be honest. Except when it comes to shoes. I used to have a bunch of tall heels in my closet; now it’s all kitten heels and cat flats! I know I’ve worn these shoes before on HPK but I just adore them. Plus the cat people come out of the woodwork when I walk by so that’s always fun.

I’ve been busy as of late, and it feels good! Between voice lessons, craft projects for work, random freelance jobs, and being granted more of a social life, I feel like I’m just really getting the most out of my days. I say “being granted a social life” because Charlieman is getting all grown up and now when I leave the house he’s like, “See ya later Mama!” instead of “WAAAAAAA!” Which there’s this selfish part of me that’s like, “What? No crying? C’mon,” but there’s the other 99% of me that’s like… “Sweet, maybe I’ll make an extra stop…”

Okay, I’ve begun to ramble about my son, so it means I need to stop! Have a fun weekend!

Favorites: Podcasts!

Fun fact: Jessi and I love podcasts! Jessi told me about them eons ago and I finally listened to her and I’m so glad I did! So today we are bringing you our favorites that we listen to, and if you know what’s good for you, you will start listening to them too! All you have to do is search for the podcast names in iTunes, click subscribe, and you’re well on your way to being a happier person. You’re welcome!

Totally Laime
Cutie pie Elizabeth Laime hosts this weekly podcast usually with her husband Andy and a fun comedian every week. It includes a fun game called “Totally/Lame Rapid Fire” which is also fun to play with your friends! Bonus: they have two other solid podcasts, Totally Married and Totally Mommy, where they answer listener questions about anything from dating a stripper to circumcision.
Fav episodes: Doug Mand, Gillian Vigman, and Dave Holmes

Slumber Party with Alie & Georgia
I found out about these two girls randomly (or not randomly at all?) through their show on the Cooking Channel, Trippin’ Out with Alie and Georgia. Girl crush commenced and then I found out they have a fun podcast too, slumber party style! They are super funny and I find I always learn something when I listen. Bonus: they like to talk about midnight snacks, one of my favorite questions of all time!
Fav episodes: Randy Liedtke, Joselyn Hughes, Joy the Baker

Comedy Bang Bang: The Podcast
This high-energy podcast can be bizarre in both good and bad ways. I find that I will binge listen a few days in a row, and then go a couple of weeks before I listen again. Host Scott Aukerman is absolutely hilarious and I catch myself saying things he says all the time. He also has Paul F. Tompkins on a lot, and simply put: they are just really funny together. I will admit it took me a few listens to start appreciating it, because they always have a “guest” on that is a comedian doing a character. Depending on who the character is can either make or break the show, but I have to say it usually makes it!
Fav episodes: Amy Poehler, Bob Odenkirk & the Birthday Boys, Ben Schwartz

I Seem Fun: The Diary of Jen Kirkman
This podcast is different than most others since Ms. Kirkman flies totally solo for every podcast. This is hard to pull off but she is so captivating and funny that it doesn’t take long to get used to. She talks about everything from current events to music to weird encounters from her life. She even dips her toe into the pool of her personal life and tells stories that are often poignant and make the podcast so very worth it. She’s a funny, super smart lady and I look forward to new episodes from her every week!
Fav episodes: I’m a Wanderer…I go round round around, Headphones Healing, Feel the Love Buzz

This Feels Terrible
Erin McGathy hosts this candid and heartfelt podcast about love sex and romance. Each week she welcomes a guest (typically from the LA comedy community) to share tales of heartbreak and woe. It’s funny and relatable and basically like listening to advice from your older sister. My only complaint is that the podcast isn’t updated regularly, which means I can’t consistently get my fix. But, if you’re just starting out there are plenty to get caught up on, and the episodes are always worth the wait!
Fav episodes: Kimberly Hall, Duncan Trussell, Dan Harmon

How Did This Get Made
This podcast examines some of the very worst movies ever made! Hosted by Paul Sheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas, it’s full of comedy and sometimes even compassion for the best of the worst movies of our time. Bonus if you’re able to watch the movie they discuss before listening to the podcast, but they are entertaining enough on their own that its not totally necessary. Super fun and Funny!
Fav episodes: The Room, Birdemic, From Justin to Kelly

Podcast tip! One of our favorite things to do is to find a good guest and then listen to random podcasts they’ve been on. Some fun guests (and hosts are good too!) we’ve stalked in the past: Natasha Legerro, Jenny Slate, Casey Wilson, Chris Gethard. Elizabeth Laime, Erin McGathy, Melissa Stephens, Jen Kirkman, June Diane Raphael, Ken Marino, Emily Gordon, and Jenny Mollen. Whew! You have a lot of listening to do!

Date Night : Neutral Milk Hotel

I’m a night owl, which can prove to be a problem when trying to take outfit pics for this little blog. But, there’s nothing like a date night outfit, am I right?!

For Christmas John bought me tix to see an old favorite (like, major all time favorite!), Neutral Milk Hotel in Kansas City. After this brutal winter we really lucked out because the weather cooperated and we got to take a mini vacay in the middle of February. I would have loved to go somewhere tropical, don’t get me wrong, but we had so much fun road tripping, eating tasty dinner and brunch and seeing the band. And I’m happy to report that the show was truly magical. A dream come true!

This dress is a true favorite and one that I often turn to for special occasions. This is actually not the first time I’ve worn this outfit to see a band I love. Collars often make me nervous because I tend to feel like I can’t breathe, but I love the triangular peekaboo collar here.

This Levi’s denim jacket is something I scored while thrifting. I don’t remember how much I paid but I know it was a steal for something so classic! Long before we got married I noticed that John and I often tend to dress alike (cute or lame?!) and this particular night he was rocking his grey Levi denim jacket. We sucked it up, dressed alike and embraced the fact that we’re just too unbearably stylish!

It was so great to get away and as I write this I can nearly smell spring around the corner. Raise your hands if you’re ready to retire your sweater tights for the year because I know I am!!

Rule number one: Stand still

I wore this dress awhile ago for these pics (before snow! what was that like?) and I never posted them, mainly because I wouldn’t stand STILL in any of these shots so all of my head-to-toe pics are blurry. It’s really the only rule in blogging, right? Stand still? Woops! BUT, the good news is I adore this dress, and this entire outfit, so I’m posting them anyway.

This dress is one of those dresses that you really don’t need to wear anything else with it, since it’s a total stand alone. A couple of darling friends of mine run a vintage pop-up shop and I found this gem amidst the other goodies. And how about these adorable kitty cat collar clips?! I spotted them at a cute place on our trip last summer to Chicago. I deemed it kismet since I had seen them on Pinterest just the week before. Unfortunately when I got home I realized I didn’t have any white collars, and the kitties weren’t showing up on my dark-collared tops. But with the purchase of this very dress my woes lifted!

Something’s funny over there….

Hope your week is going well! I’ve been having a fun week, and am looking forward to the weekend. Some friends and I are headed to HUE , a party at the Art Center dedicated to the color emerald. Naturally I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect emerald ensemble, both in my closet and out. No winners yet, but it’s only Wednesday! And b-b-b-bonus: I can wear this green outfit to St. Patty’s Day weekend when we head to St. Louis next week!
