#MonthlyMani: Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

About 3 years ago, I went on my first nail art journey. It was cloud nails (see below!). Have you tried cloud nails? I feel like I say this every month, but this is the easiest and looks so fancy! I broke out a couple greens and a purple for a little tribute to one of the most fun holidays there is:

IMG_1032

Here are the steps:

1. Paint a base coat any color you choose, just like normal. I chose purple!

2. Using the angle of the brush, make three lines in your second color, making each one a little longer than the first one. I stick with three, but if you have giant hands maybe try four? 🙂

Here’s what that looks like:

Now after that dries, pick a third shade. Basically just trace the same lines you made with the 2nd shade, but leave a little of the 2nd shade showing. Trust me, it doesn’t have to be perfect to look impressive. Mine certainly aren’t, and I received a few nice compliments on them already!

#MonthlyMani: Happy V-Day!

Are you ready for Valentine’s Day? In honor of the love-y love-y day I’m wearing red and/or pink every day this week. I own a lot of red, so this is fairly easy. Anyway, my nails are also ready for the festivities!

For this month’s theme I went as I always do: super easy! I have to let you in on a secret: These heart nails are about as easy as it gets. I took a page from Kristi’s book and used a coffee mug to show off my nails. She’s so smart!

IMG_0787

IMG_0850

Here’s what I did:

Pink heart: I used a striper. You get a bit more control with your designs using one, but alternatively you could use my go-to nail art tool: a bobby pin.

Black hearts + text: I used a sharpie! Sharpie nail art is the best thing ever. You have to use a top coat though or it will just rub right off. I have the metallic sharpies, too, and those are amazing on a dark nail.

Left hand vs. right hand: So I did the left hand myself and then was confounded on how to do my right hand. So I asked (forced) my husband to draw hearts on my right hand! I knew if there was one week that I could get an “oh, alright” from him it would be this week only. Or maybe our anniversary week. Anyway, they look absolutely goofy but they each make me smile a lot. And bonus: He didn’t even draw a penis on one of the nails! You don’t even know how surprised I was about this.

It’s not the big V-day yet! Go buy some sharpies raid your office supplies and make these nail hearts happen.

Oh wait! Better idea: Get more Valentine’s Day nail art inspiration from the rest of the Monthly Mani bloggers:

Monthly Mani: Winter Wonderland!

Hi Pretty Kitties!

Our monthly mani theme is Winter Wonderland! Since we don’t currently have any snow on the ground, I decided to put some on my nails. Confession: taking pics of mattified glitter nails is hard! I feel like you don’t really get the sense that I used a matte top coat, which I love. I have to thank Piniel over at Pin’s Place for that purchasing inspiration. Anyway, the matte white looks super milky and pretty!

I decided to add a little snowman accent nail for fun as well, which was surprisingly easy (I used the old bobby pin trick again for the eyes and nose!) Although not easy enough to do it on my right hand…

Monthly Mani: Black Tie Nails!

Hi Lovelies!

We’re unintentionally dedicating the first part of our week to nails, nails, nails! Don’t worry, we’ll be back with our weekly outfits very soon! Meanwhile, we’ve linked up with some fine bloggers to bring you our #monthlymani: black tie nails!

I love black & white with literally everything, so it was hard to pick one color to pair it with. But seriously: what is classier than gold? I love a gold moment with black and white, and these nails actually reminded me of an outfit I wore for Jessi’s Holiday Party last year. So fun! So party! So gold!

Anyway, this was really easy. I just layered the polish. Start with white, make a weird triangle shape in black, then make a smaller weird triangle shape in gold over weird black shape. Results are geometric fancy! My new term.

Polishes used: I don’t have the exact names (sorry! I may be posting this while at work…) but the white is from Sinful Colors, the black from Rimmel London, and the gold is from Sally Hansen. Maybe I’ll edit this post when I get home to include the real names. Stay tuned!

Winter Nail Colors + Tips

Well pretty kitties, turns out winter is here already (3 inches of snow yesterday! that exclamation mark is 40% excitement mixed with 60% hatred) so we are trying to see the upside to this madness: winter fingernail polish! What colors do you like to bust out against the bright white snow? Here are our top picks!

finds-layers

1. Glittery nails are essential for any holiday party this season.
Celestials :: Formula X via Sephora

2. This pop of color can really brighten up the wintertime blues!
Rapid Red :: Sally Hansen via Ulta

3. This color is so versatile it will go with everything!
Joanne :: Julep

4. A warm color like this is perfect for day to day.
School of Hard Rocks :: Essie

5. For a dramatic dark color (but not too goth-y black) go for this stunner.
Ilsa :: Julep

6. Add some fun to a gray polish with this beauty.
PixieDust in London :: Zoya

Speaking of winter, it’s time to get those nails ready for the harsh temps! Here’s an easy way to get your nails ready for winter with a quick at-home mani.

1. Start your mani by trimming up those claws (meow!) with clippers and shape them with an emery board. Start with the coarser side and end with the finer side: you’ll end up with nice, smooth edges that way. We at HPK are fans of short, round nails, but follow your heart!

2. Stop ignoring those cuticles! Get a cuticle softener and soak your digits for about 30 seconds in the stuff. Then push those puppies back using a cuticle pusher or soft nail wood stick.

3. Using a buffer, buff out those hang nails or snip them off. Be careful though cuz they can hurt if you trim too close! Now it’s time to wash your hands with soap and water.

4. Time for the fun fun part: polish those nails! Get your new favorite winter polish from above or find your own. Friendly reminder: base and top coats are a necessity!

5. Use a cuticle serum on your nails to keep them healthy. Also, just keep your hands nice and moisturized because winter is infamous for drying them out! We like to keep lotion in our purses so it’s always at the ready.

Happy Snowy Sunday!

#MonthlyMani: Autumnal Hues

This month for our #MonthlyMani series the group picked Autumnal Hues. As I mentioned in our last post, autumn has kicked up it’s chill here in Iowa so this theme really grabbed me. If I could paint little bowls of soup and giant cups of lattes on my nails, that would have been ideal since it’s how I’ve been celebrating so far. Alas, I don’t work at WAH Nails so I chose to go the fall fashion trend route of nude nails!

Have you jumped on the nude nail bandwagon yet? I’m here to convince you to get on! Once you find that perfect nude that isn’t too transparent (what’s the point?) or too pink (just wear light pink!) then you’ve found your perfect match. It took me a long time, to be honest. Usually I would go to Target thinking, “I will buy a nude nail polish,” only to leave Target thinking, “Oooh I can’t wait to see this weird baby blue texturized polish in action! Wait, what color was I going to buy?” But the other day I successfully found one that looked great (CoverGirl Forever Fawn), and so far so good! And since just painting my nails nude for a monthly manicure post seemed frightfully boring, I decided to have some fun with another 2014 nail fall fashion color: dark red!

IMG_0297

The little red dot pattern turned out a lot nicer than I thought it would, I must say! Here are a few tips if you want to try a similar look:

1. Use a dotting tool. If you don’t have one of those, do what I do and use one end of a stray bobby pin.

2. Start by putting some nail polish on the bobby pin and putting your first dot right in the center of your nail, however far down you want to go. Then just add two dots on either side of the initial dot, creating a little arch. I liked it when the first dot was slightly larger due to more polish being on the pin.

3. Have fun with your accent nails! I did the arch three times on each accent nail to shake things up a bit. You could also flip flop the colors, so paint the accent nail dark red with nude dots. I thought of that too late or I would have done it myself!

Romance in Bloom #MonthlyMani

Hi Kitties!

We’re doing something new here on the blog today: nail art! We’re linking up with a slew of lovely bloggers and we’re all sharing our nails based on the theme: Romance in Bloom. The theme was suggested by Sistas from Cali because August is “National Romance Awareness Month” in the U.S.

So when I was googling what on earth National Romance Awareness means, I came across a simple question: “What is one of the most romantic things that has happened to you?” I’ve been cleaning like crazy lately (SUPER ROMANTIC), and the other day I found a bunch of cards from Joe when we had first started dating. He would send me pretty flower bouquets at my job all the time, and would always write funny/charming/heartwarming things on the card. Well I always threw them in my underwear drawer and it was such a fun treat to find and read all of them years later!

So in honor of these notes I have for you: newspaper nails! And a sorry excuse for a flower. And no pictures of aforementioned love notes simply because I packed them away in a box last week and I definitely didn’t feel like digging them back out. Sorry! Laziness prevails.

Have you heard of newspaper nails? They are the easiest nail art ever!

All you do is:

1. wait for your (light color) base coat to completely dry
2. dip your fingers in a little rubbing alcohol
3. press your nail onto a newspaper for a few seconds.
4. after it dries, put a top coat on it and you’re done!

Some of mine are a little smudgy because I moved when I was pressing the nail to the newspaper, so try not to do that!

For the little green dot flowers I just dipped a bobby pin in the polish and used that to paint the dots. Easy!

Admittedly this is my second attempt at Romance in Bloom; the first attempt I tried to paint flowers on top of the newspaper nails and it ended up being super cluttered and just looked really tragic! Whoops.

Now go get inspired by the rest of the bloggers who have participated in #MonthlyMani, and use the hashtag and tag us on Instagram (@hereprettykittykitty) if you decide to try out your own romantic nails!
