It only takes two things: dabbing on some red lipstick and adding a string of pretty pearls around your neck!
I’ve said it before, kitties: my husband is the only reason I have nice things. About a month ago he overheard me mumbling to myself that I should try spending more than $5 on a tube of lipstick. Well, he heard me and then some!
Today is my birthday (yahoo!) and Joe let me open my presents a day early: timeless make-up from the Chanel counter (think red lipstick, jet black eye liner, and a powerful mascara) along with this beautiful string of pearls. Pearls are my birth stone, and they will always hold a special place in my heart because the first gift Joe ever gave me were these pearl earrings I’m wearing.
Last weekend Joe also took me out for a lovely date night in St. Louis for an early b-day treat. We went to Franco, a French restaurant in Soulard (shout out Krystle for the recommendation!) and it. was. so. good! Speaking of food, tonight Joe is making me my birthday dinner, which will consist of all of my fav foods: white cheddar mac and cheese, crab rangoon, and strawberry shortcake. Oi, you can tell I’m old because my birthday now revolves around food….

Welcome to my birthday party outfit! Since my birthday fell on a monday this year (boring!) I decided to throw a joint party with a friend the weekend before both our birthdays. Why celebrate one birthday when you can celebrate two?! This party also kicked off the week I took off from work so let’s just say I was pretty excited.
As usual I got a little too dressed up for the party, but honestly I’ve been doing that my whole life, why stop now? I ordered this one online from Nasty Gal and it’s almost perfect. It’s a wrap dress and therefore incredibly low cut, but nothing a little safety pin-up couldn’t fix.
The party was So. Much. Fun! Since it was Easter weekend Marlena couldn’t make it, and a party is never the same without her and her hubs. But, we still managed to have a blast. The usual drinking and dancing ensued. There were champagne cocktails aplenty for everyone and I made the usual, Amy Sedaris’s Lil Smoky Cheeseball, which is always a hit. My friend Alix set me up with an Easter egg hunt (so fun!) and I was given some very lovely gifts. You can see evidence of the egg hunt and gifts I added throughout the evening in the last picture (a cute Betsy Johnson necklace from my friend Tiffany and a Blondie pin from my friend Scott).
As I’ve said before my Birthday is a week long, if I can manage it, and don’t worry, I did! John and I went to Minneapolis so I could get my back tattoo worked on (I know, I can’t stop! But I think I will stop for awhile. Newsflash: tattoos are painful! Pics to come…)
Mar and our friend Mindy took me out to one of my fav restaurants this week for a belated birthday dinner. Even though they couldn’t make it to the party it was super fun to have quality time and yummy drinks and food with some of the best ladies I know. And after dinner Mar and I went to see Sleigh Bells and it did not disappoint!
And you know what, that’s not even everything! But suffice to say I have some really rad friends and family that make me feel loved always, but especially on my b-day!

My mom has a lot of cookbooks, and most of them have been so loved over the years they are missing covers, dog-eared, with an unavoidable butter stain or two signaling a well used recipe. One in particular is a spiral-bound bank employee type from the 80s that has at least 3 cobbler recipes in it, and Mom has crafted her own version for it, scrawled in her pretty handwriting in the margins.
There are two reasons why I’ve eaten this dessert so much, besides the obvious fact that it’s delicious: 1) there is a high chance you already have all the ingredients except the fruit and 2) in about an hour you will find yourself standing over the stove, eating straight from the pan.
So what better way to continue celebrating my Birthday Week than with my favorite cobbler plus my favorite fruit? We’ve never used strawberries before and holy cow I wish I would have thought of it sooner. The crispy, buttery crust mixed with the softened, sweet strawberries? So good. Mom usually makes it with blackberries or peaches, and those are great, but this strawberry version is a keeper!
2 pounds strawberries, washed and hulled
1/2 cup butter
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
Dash of salt
Preheat the oven to 350° F. Slice all the strawberries. Mash roughly half of them in a separate bowl and add about 1 tsp sugar (note: the riper the strawberries, the less sugar is needed). Set aside.
Take your stick of butter and put it in the 9×13 pan. Melt it by putting it in your preheating oven.
Meanwhile, mix remaining ingredients. Remove pan from oven once butter is melted and pour batter over the melted butter, spreading it as evenly as you can. Next pour the strawberries over the batter. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until edges are a pretty brown.

I know my birthday was a little while ago but I’m just now getting around to debuting some of the amazing birthday gifts I got!! Most of this outfit here was gifted to me from the lovely Marlena (shocker, I know!) It’s really easy for us to shop for each other because we have such similar taste and fashion sense- I think we both usually just find stuff we want and then gift it to the other- that’s what I do anyway 🙂
I’ll jump right down to the shoes because they’re my favorite part of this outfit. Mint green cat shoes that are oh so comfy…winners! I was shocked when I saw them and can’t get enough of them.
I love this striped dress too. The skirt is short and airy and perfect for spring and summer. It’s taking me a little time to get used to wearing dresses without tights after the longest winter ever, but its so nice to be able to set my legs free.
I bought an iPad with my birthday money and I am absolutely LOVING it! And it turns out this purse is the perfect little carrying case. Check out Marlena’s DIY to find out how to make one for yourself.
John brought me these sunglasses from his recent trip to Portland, which is great since I really don’t have any sunglasses….(jk, my home is overflowing with them.) But I don’t have any like this, and I love them!
Not to sound 80 years old or anything, but I’m soooooo excited for beautiful weather. Marlena and I have been brainstorming about all the fun things we want to do blog wise now that its spring and I can’t wait for you guys to see what we have in store!
