I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Iowa State Fair. The crowds and hot weather can be overwhelming and really make or break a trip to the fair. With that in mind I kept my outfit cool, casual, comfy and country. At the fair I’m a little out of my element and I want to dress for the occasion and still be me. Mission accomplished I think!
There’s comfort in the routine my hubs and I have developed over the years when tackling the fair and the novelty of this once-a-year occurrence is enough to drag my butt away from the pool for awhile and experience the greatness that is The Iowa State Fair. In no particular order here are my top 5 favorite things about the fair:
1) The Food
Once we walk through the gates and into the fairgrounds John and I typically hit up the fried veggie stand immediately. We especially love the veggie corn dogs and deep-friend pickles, cheese curds and mushrooms. This year we made two visits and on the second time around scarfed Tenderloins and a fried cupcake. Ummmmm yum! Also disgusting. But yum.
2) The People Watching
All kinds of people go to the fair. All. Kinds. Once we get our food we stuff our faces and observe everyone walking around. The fair fashion is incredible! I also try to spy on what other people are eating. Since I have tunnel vision about my favorite food I don’t often branch out, so there’s lots I haven’t tried.
3) The Sky Ride
It’s just a colorful ski-lift but it’s a nice reprieve from the crowds and walking.
4) The Photo Ops
There are many cardboard cut-outs peppered around the fairgrounds and are 100% my favorite pictures to take every year. Check out our pic below to see what I’m talking about. The cow barn is where it’s at!
5) The Midway At Night
I am a total sucker for brightly lit carnival rides, so the midway at night is basically a dream come true. I know carnival rides can be controversial but sorry, I love em! Pretty much the whole reason we went the second time was to experience the midway after dark. We always end the fair with a spin on the ferris wheel and it’s just ten times better at night!

The Iowa State Fair is one of those annual events that fellow Iowans either love or hate: there doesn’t seem to be much in-between. I for one love it! This year we kept it pretty simple; we saw the cows, ate a corn dog, and rode the Berry-Go-Round (which.. yikes! Charlie may have loved it but I thought I was going to get sick!). Then as we were leaving we stopped for some ice cream! We did meet up with Jessi and friends and took a state fair time-out to take some pics of our outfits.
I decided to keep it pretty easy and breezy for the fair this year. Jessi gave me this dress for my birthday and I have been wearing it pretty much every week. It’s so comfy and pretty! I decided to pair it with some ruffly socks and my boots for a bit of a country-fied look.
One of my favorite things about the fair is that I’ve been going pretty much every year for the last 7 or so years, and I know for a fact that I’ve never seen everything. Take this pretty garden Jessi and I discovered right by the agriculture building; I’d never noticed this little beautiful pocket right off one of the main roads before!

Have a fun weekend!
Oooooh I love the fair! I love that the lamb burgers are sold within earshot of the live lambs (sorry, folks. so funny/sad), I love having a hard time deciding between deep fried macaroni and cheese or a deep fried veggie medley for lunch (answer: all of the above), I love all of the cuckoo people running around adorned with crazy pink camouflage fanny packs with their kids on leashes, I. Love. It. All!
I got this blouse in Lincoln, Nebraska during our family vacation and I’ve been dying to style it for a post. The puffy sleeves, the knotted tie, the tiny black polka dots, the bright yellow: obsessed. This is probably one of the first outfits I’ve styled where I’m only wearing one pattern, and it’s barely there. Because of this I paired the top with a couple of pops of color and away we went.
Highlights from our afternoon included John hiding the deep fried mushrooms, all things unicorns, bleating goats and lambs, my first ever sky ride (thank you for support, Jessi!), and taking fun pictures with cardboard cutouts of course!

Who loves the fair??? I do, I do!! It’s a beautiful time of the year to embrace all things Iowa: agriculture, crafts, fried food and short shorts (ok, maybe that’s not all Iowa specific, but it’s all fantastic nonetheless.) John and I always make a beeline for the fried veggie stand- it’s our absolute favorite! Fried pickles are never better than from this veggie stand, not to mention fried mushrooms, cauliflower and cheese curds. Cheese is a vegetable, right? We also picked up some gigantic tenderloins along the way and proceeded to stuff our faces full of food. It was amazing!!
Other highlights included John’s personalized screen printed unicorn t-shirt (another fair tradition of ours), me coaching Marlena through our ski lift ride, admiring all the super cute goats, and the matching, engraved unicorn necklaces John and I treated ourselves too. Unfortunately I was too stuffed to indulge in a deep fried cupcake (so sad!) but there’s always next year, right?
I love to go to the fair in style and pulled out my own favorite pair of short shorts for the occasion. A great thing about the Iowa State Fair: you can pretty much get away with wearing anything. Nothing says country to me better than gingham print and ruffles and wouldn’t you know, I just happened to have that perfect combo! Also spending a day at the fair calls for the purrrrfect pair of walking shoes, so I pulled out my trusty Worishofer’s, which never do me wrong. And finally, topping everything off with animal accessories, I think I fit in beautifully!
