On crop tops in your 30s

As Jessi mentioned in her last post, 80/35 is always a highlight of the summer, and this year was no different! Fashion-wise, I declared this year to be Crop Top Year at the music festival. Before you cringe and think, “Oh God, isn’t she in her thirties?” please know that high-waisted skirts are the solution to the “How DO I make this a crop top year when I’m 32?”

I found this gem of a denim crop while thrifting with Jessi in Kansas City earlier this summer. It actually has a hole in the middle of it to show off your totties but I opted out of that little circus and instead tied this scarf around myself like a little gift and pulled the bow part out! The first day of the music festival was July 4th, so naturally I had to milk that for all it was worth. This amazing Western-style skirt I found just days before the festival, and it’s really the perfect skirt to get your twirl on in.

Friday highlights: Watching my son tap his little foot to the beat of the music and Conor Oberst taking me back to 2002 when I loved Bright Eyes!

Day two I of course continued with my crop + high waisted skirt theme, although this time I left the country at home and went with a bit bolder ensemble. I decided on tights because I felt like I was going to end up accidentally flashing my butt to strangers every time I sat down on the street curb to eat a corn dog. Problem solver!

This outfit is my favorite of the two, which surprises me since I admittedly didn’t have it on all day. In the morning I opted for an easy, summer dress because my hangover was saying to me, “You want to wear what? Here, just put this on.” But in the middle of the day Joe and I went with my mother-in-law and Charlie to my brother-in-law’s house for a fun BBQ and after we got back I decided to step it up.

Saturday highlights: Boy and Bear, Har-di-Har, cheeseburger at Proof, Those Darlins, banging down the bathroom door and running full speed to get to my girls for “The Distance” by Cake. Yes, I am that fan.

Talk to you soon kitties!

Truly exceptional times

Another year, another 80/35 notch in my belt! 80/35 is a major highlight of the summer and this year didn’t disappoint. I love the mix of seeing my friends, local bands play (Gloom Balloon, Foxholes and Quick Piss) and rocking out to bigger acts that have filled my iPod for years (Best Coast! Those Darlins’!). Nonstop music, plus friends, plus zero commitments to anything other than the festival make for some truly exceptional times.

I try to plan my outfits in advance; I think long and hard, but this year my ideas were derailed at the last minute on both days. Day 1 was super sunny so I wanted to stay cool and yes, get some sun. This denim racer-back dress is comfortable, fairly lightweight and has pockets (important, duh!) my favorite thing about this outfit though are the new Ray-Bans my hubs gifted me after he recently bought new ones for his birthday. Lucky for me his head is too big for them (his words) and I must say it’s a bit of a luxury to rock some sunnies worth more than $10 in cost and quality.

Outfit details: Dress, sandals, purse :: thrifted | sunnies :: Ray-Ban | bow :: gift from Marlena! | necklace :: Domestica | ring :: Big Button Archive | belt :: gift! (Thrifted)

On day 1 I ended up in bed before the headliner was even done. Oops! Too much fun! But that meant I had plenty of time to rest up for day 2. The day was overcast and actually pretty perfect temperature-wise. I scrapped a seventies floral dress in lieu of this gingham skirt and vintage sweater tank. I got the top from a friend’s garage sale a few days before for two dollars and thrifted the skirt in Omaha ages ago. I threw on boots just in case it rained (it didn’t) but left my jacket and umbrella at home. Also this year I downsized to a smaller purse and I have to say it was a good move for me. Dancing with a bulky purse is tricky, ya know?

After the festival was over me and Mar, our husbands and my brother and his lovely girlfriend ate a gigantic brunch the next day and went on our separate ways after pretty much spending the whole weekend together. It was *so* fun and I can’t wait til next year!!

80/35 Music Festival Street Style

Luckily while we were taking in all the music and booze this past weekend, Jessi and I were smart enough to stop some pretty kitties that brought their A-game to 80/35 this year. Since the first day of the festival was the 4th, we loved all the creative patriotic outfits. Of course, we were also pumped to see so many cat prints!

Outfit Inspiration: 80/35 Festival!

Hi Pretty Kitties! Are you as excited as we are for the big festival tomorrow?! MEOW! For those of you dear cats not in the Des Moines area, tomorrow is the start of one of the best weekends in Des Moines: 80/35! Piled full of great bands, fun people, endless booze and fireworks, the result is too. much. fun! So do you need some last minute inspiration on what to wear? Look no further, we have a couple ideas for you:

FRIDAY (picked by Marlena)

Since it is the 4th of July and all, why not represent?

1. This hat will keep you cool while looking cooler.

2. Time to take your outfit up a notch with this dazzling coin collar necklace. Let’s hope it’s doesn’t get too hot in the sun!

3. Acid wash is always a yes in my eyes.
Kid Cutie Dress :: Modcloth

4. Bring it all together with these patriotic sunnies.

5. You’ll need a tote for all those festival necessities: water, sunscreen, and toilet paper!
A Cutout Above the Best Tote :: Modcloth

6. If you are one of those people that can rock a giant wedge for 12 hours, this is your shoe! Otherwise, better store some standby flip flops in that tote….

SATURDAY (picked by Jessi)

1. Rock star it up with some easy gold hoops.
Vanessa Mooney Stevie Gold Hoops :: Urban Outfitters

2. Stripes + floral = my summer obsession!

5. Those booties are too cute (if not the most practical…) Don’t worry if your feet get sore, that’s what the booze is for!
Wild West Side Leather Bootie :: Nasty Gal

6. Ok, fine, a clutch may not be super practical either for a festival but if you’re in it for the fashion who cares?! Just convince one of your besties with an oversized tote to store it for you when you’re busy clutching beer in one hand and water in the other. That’s what friends are for!
Raffaella Straw Clutch :: Francesca’s

Hope to see you there!

I’m With the Band

Guess what? This past year, thanks to my awesome fiancé, I’ve been able to live my life-long dream of being in a band. And not high school concert band/marching band, which, yes, I participated in (flautist!) but an actual band with two super talented brothers who so generously let me share the stage with them. Winning! We’re called Pussy Willow (John’s genius band name) and this was our 3rd show ever over Labor Day weekend. We played outside at the PBR bar in downtown Des Moines on a beeeeautiful night. Magical! I can’t take much credit for the music- John writes it all and tells me what to play, which is a-ok with me. But what I can take credit for is this awesome tapestry dress I scored on a recent shopping trip! It’s short short short, but was too cute to pass up. I admit I’ll be much more comfortable in a month or so when I can slip some tights on underneath and can run around freely without worrying abut flashing everybody. I think I made it through the night flash free (???) and it was worth it to hear comments such as,

“Is she wearing an old couch?”
“Yes, I think so.”

Hey, a tapestry pattern isn’t for everyone, but it’s purrrrfect for me!

The action shot here is a bit dark, I know, but nonetheless is proof that I’m with the band. Yay!
All in all a lovely night with lots of great music and great friends. Ultimate fun!

80/35 Weekend

I look forward to 80/35 every year. It’s Des Moines’ best music festival, and it’s within walking distance to my house. Kitties, I had the BEST weekend! Our good friends Paul and Vanessa were in town from Portland, my little brother came from Missouri, and then being surrounded by all my favorite Des Moines people is always a treat.

Highlights of Day 1 included Charlie dancing his little ass off to Yeasayer, being blown away by David Byrne + St. Vincent, eating amazing gyros, Little Mermaid memories, and fun shots at the Lift.

I had put more energy into thinking about Saturday’s outfit than Friday’s, so I actually threw this on last minute. I just got this maxi dress from our Chicago trip and it’s insanely comfortable. I added these red shell earrings to help add a little patriotism to the festive weekend.

You’ll find our photos a little lacking on quality this week. It’s a good thing we’re not always half drunk when we do these pics!

Day 1 outfit details: red shell earrings & belt :: gifts from Jessi | anchor maxi dress :: kokorokoko | flip flops :: target

Day 2 I found myself shedding the high-waisted jean shorts I was going to wear because they were too hot and uncomfortable. I feel like I had a pretty quintessential festival outfit on anyway:  the flower crown, the crop top, the vest . . .  I just went for it.

Day 2 highlights: Wavves, amazing crab rangoon, trying to rap along with Wu Tang Clan, after party at our house, my decisively on point imitation of a basement cricket.

Day 2 outfit details: flower crown :: DIY | sunglasses :: Urban Outfitters (similar) | earrings :: H&M (similar) | vest :: Charlotte Russe | giraffe crop tank :: gift from Jessi | heart necklace :: Forever 21 | polka dot shorts :: Target | Shoes :: Urban Outfitters

Festival Fashion

80/35 marks the end of one of my favorite times of the year. I just love summer and June is always so jam packed for me. By the time 80/35 rolls around I’m exhausted but have just enough in me to power through the weekend, resulting in a spectacular time. I got to dance with some lovely friends, eat awesome festival food, hang out with my brother, and even hang in the VIP area thanks to my man!

I often start planning my 80/35 outfits weeks in advance, anticipating how the weather will be and what will be comfortable and cute enough to run around all day in. I think I found two solid winners this year!

On day one I enjoyed a little bit of red bull and peach vodka from the VIP area for some energy- yum yum!
You may remember this top from an earlier post. I got it around my birthday, and because it’s a crop top it can be hard for me to pull off. I decided to pair it with a strapless dress, mixing patterns as I please!
I got these Worishofer sandals recently, and they are dream-come-true shoes. They are so, so, SO comfortable! Like walking on air, really.
I decided to go with a smaller purse than usual this year, but you can see I managed to pack in the essentials: bottled water, sunscreen, wallet and phone. In years past I’ve brought a jacket, umbrella and even extra shoes (which actually came in handy when a friend broke her sandals!) but this year I wanted to travel more lightly, and I still made it through okay.

As we were walking down to the festival I took a spill on the sidewalk and busted up my knee and ankle. Luckily I wasn’t hurt badly enough to impede on the fun, but you can definitely see some of my battle wounds in these pics. Ow!

Day one outfit details : top :: urban outfitters | necklace: forever21 | dress :: forever21 | Worishofer sandals :: Zappos | purse :: Modcloth

For my second day outfit I picked another strapless dress, but since I’m not always super comfortable going strapless I safety pinned this scarf to my dress to turn it into a halter. That way I didn’t have to spend the entire day making sure my dress was in place. And it worked out beautifully. Success!
I got these sandals recently at Hill Vintage and really love them. I hadn’t even worn them before, so I was definitely risking comfort since I wasn’t completely sure how comfy they would be. But they’re slightly big on me, which helped, and they got me through the day purrrrfectly!
Since this all took place July 4th weekend I wanted to continue the red, white and blue theme, hence the red belt. I love getting super into holidays and the Fourth of July is no exception! BBQ and fireworks… Sign me up!

All in all, this years festival was majorly successful. Highlights included David Byrne and St. Vincent, Deehunter, Wavves, Yeasayer, and I admit, I even got into Wu-Tang a bit with Marlena.
And now I’m gonna focus more on going to the pool, hanging out with my kitties, catching up on some summer reading and breathe a little. Ahhhhhhh. See ya next year, 80/35!

Street Style: 80/35

We had soooo much fun this past weekend at the 80/35 music festival, and there were so many cute ladies that we had to stop and take their pic for our first ever Street Style post. A lot of our darling friends made the cut, but they were just too adorable and festive not to include!

Aren’t they all too cute?! We’ll post our outfits for the 2-day event later on this week, so check back!

Favorites: 80/35 Music Festival!

80/35 is Des Moines’ best music festival and it’s happening next weekend! Stumped about what to wear? Well, when planning an outfit for a day at a music festival there are many things to consider. Just how hot will it be? Rain or shine? Can I stand AND sit comfortably in this outfit?  Can I throw my jacket, emergency toilet paper, wallet, etc into my bag and still be able to dance comfortably? So many questions!

1. I’ve been crushing hard on overalls and I think this is the perfect occasion to finally break them out.
Railroad Printed Overalls :: Free People

2. I’m a sucker for a brown woven bag. And although we would highly recommend a denim fanny pack, good luck, they’re hard to find!
Tan Crossbody Bag :: Dorothy Perkins

3. Oh wait, they really aren’t too hard to find! You just have to look at K-mart. Naturally.
Joe Boxer Fanny Pack :: K-mart

4. I’m not usually one for a maxi dress, but I find this one unreasonably cute. Just be careful when making a trip to the dreaded port-a-potty!
Tall it a Day Maxi Dress :: Lulu’s

5. You could match these statement earrings with a white tee and some jean shorts and still look stylish.
River Island Feather Drop Earrings :: ASOS

6. You’ll want a comfy shoe, for sure, and if you can handle it, something with a little extra height is great for when tall boys will inevitably stand right in front of you…
Kimchi Blue Quarter Strap Sandal :: Urban Outfitters

7. The festival IS 4th of July weekend after all, so in this case we support being overtly patriotic!
For Love & Lemons Americana Dress :: Urban Outfitters

8. Sunnies are imperative. Definitely pack one pair, if not more!
Dark Sky Shades :: Nasty Gal

Of course, nothing says a music festival like a pretty floral crown. Take 30 minutes out of your day and make one, the DIY is right here!

Hope to see you there!
