Looking at these pictures I feel a bit like a chameleon. The black/white/brown/blue palette i’ve got going on blends in pretty easily with the barren landscape… Thank goodness for those red lips!
I wear this denim shirt shirt often but rarely button it all the way up. I’m a big fan of a plunging neckline, both for aesthetic and comfort, but I guess the button-up bug bit me on this particular day. I was rummaging through my jewelry drawer and found this cutie bow pin. (And by “rummaging” I mean grabbing anything that wasn’t tangled together and swearing a bit. Anyone semi-disorganized with a jewelry drawer knows what I’m talking about!) As far as my other accessories go I’d love to say they were strategically plotted, but my scarves are about as well organized as my jewelry drawer, so I grabbed the first favorite I saw and tied it atop my head.
I pulled the ole ‘wear a dress as a skirt trick’ (is that a thing? I guess it is for me!); I love this dress but it’s sleeveless, and therefore not conducive for a February photo shoot.
Something that’s been getting me through the last bit of winter is my obsession with Spotify. I know I’m the last person on the planet to jump on this train but I’ve had a lot of fun discovering some new music and revisiting lots of old favorites. Suffice it to say, I’ve been spending many nights on the couch with my Spotify and a cat on my lap, and it’s pretty great!

Where do you go when it’s gray and gloomy outside for photos? May I suggest a bright, giant monster mural where you can stand in front of one of the said monsters and look like you’re being eaten? My two-year-old son would approve, especially if there was a fart joke somewhere in this post.
Anyway, today’s outfit post is brought to you by my favorite combination of black and white mixed with a bright pop of color. Egads, I just looked back at my last 3 outfit posts and they all fit under this category! I need to get an imagination already. Next week: I refrain from black and white!
I actually had quite a bit of fun with this outfit. I have been feeling purple lately (Oh no, what does that mean?) so I added my pretty purple purse, earrings, bow, and nails. Vavoom! Last but not least, my hair. It’s quite subtle but my braid isn’t just any old braid. I actually parted it into 3 strands, like you do, but then braided one of the strands before braiding the entire thing. I saw it on The Beauty Department. I love it, although now I realize you can’t really tell. Rats!
Looks like I couldn’t work in a good fart joke. It’s very hard to do in this medium without sound.

And here we have another one of my favorite stores of all time, which you can find nearby in Iowa City. White Rabbit is a real love of mine and has been for a few years. They sell locally handmade goods as well as re-worked vintage clothes. On this particular shopping trip I picked up a few sweaters (because you can never have enough), as well as a bad ass, high-waisted, acid washed, knee length denim skirt. That’s a mouthful!
But this dress. This dress! Boyfriend gifted it to me for my 6 months past 30th birthday. It’s Dear Creatures and I love it (obvi.) And to be clear, I’ve never been big on brand names, although I have been real proud to sport the Lee tag on the aforementioned denim skirt… But I do love Dear Creatures, and that’s for the simple fact that they make the cutest damn dresses. Period. The end.
This dress is a real trickster, most people think it’s a skirt and separate top, but surprise… It’s a dress! It’s got mint, it’s got polka dots, it’s got pockets, it’s practically perfect as any good birthday dress should be.
You may or may not have noticed, but this belt is a major outfit staple for me. I thrifted it from who knows where and it’s here to stay. I’ve punched extra holes in the leather to make it more versatile, and even sent it through the sewing machine when it came unstitched from behind. Me and this belt, we’re in it for the long haul, so get used to it!
Bonus: you can peak into my shopping bag and get just a taste of my lovely purchases from White Rabbit. So enjoy!

One thing (of many) that make Jessi and I very similar: if we find a dress we love, we will wear the hell out of it. One lovely afternoon we stopped into Hill Vintage and both found our own all-star dress! Things I love about it: the keyhole and button, the pockets, the color…. and it’s not too lightweight either, so these days where it’s cool in the morning yet warm in the early evening are a-okay with me.
On this particular day we had a fun afternoon with our boyz playing in the playground at Union Park. Jessi went on a super awesome albeit super hot slide (metal + the sun = danger!) while Charlie (my son) ran around like a maniac and Joe and John took pics of funny graffiti. But we all came together to ride this super sweet carousel.
Summer is officially over, and the carousel officially closes for the season tomorrow. But I’m laser focused on the coming month, which is going to include pumpkin patches, the best wedding ever, and this dress with tights!

Did you see Jessi’s post from Wednesday with her take on the Jolene Dress? Here’s the thing: Melissa, one of the owners over at Vitae Design Collective, knows us well and mentioned they had just received some pieces from Dear Creatures’ fall collection. Well we trotted over and all the pieces are so stunning it was hard to choose just one to style! We settled on this fun black and white print with a darling little bow detail.
For my style up, I decided to throw this skirt over it. I love black and white with bold colors and these shoes have been speaking to me lately even though I bought them like 3 years ago. I went minimal on the accessories (not even sure you can see my pearl earrings in these pics) because I have sold bold graphic prints already.
We live near this pretty cemetery and, creepy or not, sometimes we take our son there on walks. We did that the other day and I noticed this gorgeous mausoleum. So if you thought to yourself, “Is she in a graveyard?” the answer is a big ol’ yes! But seriously: isn’t it darling? I kept thinking a cute little hobbit was going to pop out and offer us some cookies.
Hope you’re having a great week! Mine has included a nonstop puking baby, becoming mayor of my dentist’s office on foursquare (ugh), and endless meetings at work. However, it’s Friday! So things are going up from here.
Another big thanks to Vitae for letting us borrow such a lovely dress for a few hours!

Guess what? This past year, thanks to my awesome fiancé, I’ve been able to live my life-long dream of being in a band. And not high school concert band/marching band, which, yes, I participated in (flautist!) but an actual band with two super talented brothers who so generously let me share the stage with them. Winning! We’re called Pussy Willow (John’s genius band name) and this was our 3rd show ever over Labor Day weekend. We played outside at the PBR bar in downtown Des Moines on a beeeeautiful night. Magical! I can’t take much credit for the music- John writes it all and tells me what to play, which is a-ok with me. But what I can take credit for is this awesome tapestry dress I scored on a recent shopping trip! It’s short short short, but was too cute to pass up. I admit I’ll be much more comfortable in a month or so when I can slip some tights on underneath and can run around freely without worrying abut flashing everybody. I think I made it through the night flash free (???) and it was worth it to hear comments such as,
“Is she wearing an old couch?”
“Yes, I think so.”
Hey, a tapestry pattern isn’t for everyone, but it’s purrrrfect for me!
The action shot here is a bit dark, I know, but nonetheless is proof that I’m with the band. Yay!
All in all a lovely night with lots of great music and great friends. Ultimate fun!

As Jessi mentioned, we headed to Chicago for She & Him for a birthday weekend. My best friend in the whole wide world, Kim, lives in Chicago so I was so excited I couldn’t sleep for days. I felt like when I was 12 and would toss and turn thinking about rollercoasters the night before going to Six Flags. I’m happy to report the weekend lived up to my sleepless nights!
Kim knows that when I visit I have to stop at my two favorite vintage shops, Kokorokoko and Shangri-La Vintage. They did not disappoint! Jessi found out about the Urban Outfitters Outlet store on Clark and let’s just say we didn’t want to leave.
For the concert I found my inner (outer?) Zooey and wore this Dear Creatures dress Joe bought me for painting the kitchen. For accessories, I just kept adding what I bought to the ensemble. When Kim (or was it Jessi?) pointed out this amazing zebra mural I knew it was perfect for my outfit! I kind of blend right in, don’t I?
Chicago highlights included: Uber cab, playing board games with Jessi, John and Kim the first night, shopping and drinking beer, the concert, Vernon and the Ethiopian Bread Debacle, Jessi trying to get on the L, getting bitten all night by a lovely little demon cat named Joey, and catching up with Miss Kim. So, basically every minute! And I thought turning 31 would be oh so boring. . .
