Red on red

My parents have been living in Kansas City for like 10 years and not once, NOT ONCE! did I think to myself, “Let’s go vintage shopping!” How can this be, pretty kitties? I think I have always been sucked into the H&M and Urban Outfitters and it just never occurred to me until recently! Joe and I had a day date while Charlie hung out with his grandparents. We went to Westport, I tried on about 2,000 dresses (and took 3 home!), we went to a record store, a toy store, walked around a bunch, and then went and met back up with my parents. It was a beautiful day that was made all the better by the new spring clothes!

So this is one of the dresses I bought. I’m in love! I’m a sucker for a cute boat neck, and this bandana pattern is the tops! I paired it with my red jacket, which I was a little iffy about, but then Charlie said, “You look cute Mama!” so I left it on. Nothing like a compliment from a 2 year-old to give confidence to your fashion choices!

Double Trouble: Dear Creatures Part Un

Love. This. Dress. Love it!
We at Here Pretty Kitty are very fortunate to have friends in high places. And for this first installment of Double Trouble our good friends at Vitae Design Collective in the Des Moines East Village so graciously let us borrow this fabulous Dear Creatures dress for an afternoon. We took it, we styled it, we loved it, and then we had to give it back… But it was fun while it lasted!

One thing I love about this dress is that it’s different than anything else I have in my closet. I don’t typically buy long-sleeved dresses, and if I do I often end up shortening the sleeves. What can I say, unless there’s a cardigan involved I’m just not a long-sleeve kind of girl.
This was an interesting number to style because, while we both fell in love with it, we realized that the dress is so great on its own it didn’t need much help. But, obviously, we found a way!

If it was cooler outside you better believe I’d be throwing some colored tights under this bad boy. But, since September’s only just begun (and its still 90 degrees every day….) I couldn’t bring myself to slip into tights just yet, no matter how cute it would be. Ankles booties though? Bring em on. And I wanted to wrap a cool summer scarf around my neck but couldn’t bring myself to cover up the darling neckline detail. Thus, the scarf in my hair. And finally I decided it was the perfect time to break out this amazing vintage purse a friend recently gave me. The bag is a real gem and again, unlike anything else in my closet.
I can’t say enough good things about this dress. It’s lightweight and so comfortable and could easily be worn to work or out for dinner and drinks with friends (mojitos and small plates anyone??? Yes please!) All in all an A+ from me!

Check back soon for Marlena’s take on this little lady!

Matchy-Matchy Swamp Thing

These pics turned out fine, but let me tell you: taking pics next to a flooded river smells wretched. Wretched I tell you! Good thing you can’t smell through the screen. Yikes.

Anyway, I decided to be matchy on this particular day. I was looking for the perfect flats to wear and look: black and orange! Why not? This racerback tank is actually a dress, and this skirt used to be a dress! A full-length, long-sleeved dress, to be exact. Picture that! I love bows and all, but it was just too much. I cut off the top right over the elastic waist and shortened the skirt and now it’s a staple of mine.

I just realized that Jessi gave me these flats and this belt! Thanks girl!

Summer has been absolutely heavenly so far. As Jessi mentioned, we’ve celebrating all things Jessi this weekend with her bachelorette party and bridal shower and it’s been so fun! And don’t forget to tune in next week for our outfits along with a fun (and super easy (as always!)) DIY. And yes, it’s cat related!

Festival Fashion

80/35 marks the end of one of my favorite times of the year. I just love summer and June is always so jam packed for me. By the time 80/35 rolls around I’m exhausted but have just enough in me to power through the weekend, resulting in a spectacular time. I got to dance with some lovely friends, eat awesome festival food, hang out with my brother, and even hang in the VIP area thanks to my man!

I often start planning my 80/35 outfits weeks in advance, anticipating how the weather will be and what will be comfortable and cute enough to run around all day in. I think I found two solid winners this year!

On day one I enjoyed a little bit of red bull and peach vodka from the VIP area for some energy- yum yum!
You may remember this top from an earlier post. I got it around my birthday, and because it’s a crop top it can be hard for me to pull off. I decided to pair it with a strapless dress, mixing patterns as I please!
I got these Worishofer sandals recently, and they are dream-come-true shoes. They are so, so, SO comfortable! Like walking on air, really.
I decided to go with a smaller purse than usual this year, but you can see I managed to pack in the essentials: bottled water, sunscreen, wallet and phone. In years past I’ve brought a jacket, umbrella and even extra shoes (which actually came in handy when a friend broke her sandals!) but this year I wanted to travel more lightly, and I still made it through okay.

As we were walking down to the festival I took a spill on the sidewalk and busted up my knee and ankle. Luckily I wasn’t hurt badly enough to impede on the fun, but you can definitely see some of my battle wounds in these pics. Ow!

For my second day outfit I picked another strapless dress, but since I’m not always super comfortable going strapless I safety pinned this scarf to my dress to turn it into a halter. That way I didn’t have to spend the entire day making sure my dress was in place. And it worked out beautifully. Success!
I got these sandals recently at Hill Vintage and really love them. I hadn’t even worn them before, so I was definitely risking comfort since I wasn’t completely sure how comfy they would be. But they’re slightly big on me, which helped, and they got me through the day purrrrfectly!
Since this all took place July 4th weekend I wanted to continue the red, white and blue theme, hence the red belt. I love getting super into holidays and the Fourth of July is no exception! BBQ and fireworks… Sign me up!

All in all, this years festival was majorly successful. Highlights included David Byrne and St. Vincent, Deehunter, Wavves, Yeasayer, and I admit, I even got into Wu-Tang a bit with Marlena.
And now I’m gonna focus more on going to the pool, hanging out with my kitties, catching up on some summer reading and breathe a little. Ahhhhhhh. See ya next year, 80/35!

Street Style: 80/35

We had soooo much fun this past weekend at the 80/35 music festival, and there were so many cute ladies that we had to stop and take their pic for our first ever Street Style post. A lot of our darling friends made the cut, but they were just too adorable and festive not to include!

Vanessa | Alecia | Emily

Jess | Erin | Z

Anna | Jessi | Berkleigh

Aren’t they all too cute?! We’ll post our outfits for the 2-day event later on this week, so check back!

Polka Dot Baby

This polka dot number is my new perfect summer dress. It’s magical! It’s the total package: v-neck, button down, racer back, polka dots… I’m in love! I got this baby at target and it was love at first sight. I didn’t even try it on, I just knew we were meant to be.
It’s been just right for any occasion: work, date night with my love, going out with friends and even sitting around playing board games and Nintendo. I often do this with a new piece of clothing. I’ll become obsessed and wear it multiple times a week until the next dress/top/whatever comes along. Pretty fickle, huh? But I feel confident this darling will last the test of time. We shall see…

Also, speaking of love, how in love do I look with that cupcake?!

I got this belt from Etsy a few years ago. It’s a very special belt that I don’t pull out for just any outfit. But you guys know how I feel about this special dress…

I know it’s not for everyone, but I love pairing ankle boots with a summer dress or shorts. These boots also came from Etsy, and they’ve sat around in my closet for quite awhile, but one day I got the urge the throw them on and they’re now heavily incorporated into my summer wardrobe. This is why I can and should never get rid of anything!

I don’t know abut everyone else but I’m having a pretty great summer so far! I’ve already gotten some decent pool time in, plenty of summer drinks with friends, and sitting outside and reading and soaking up the sun. Cheers to my favorite season!!
