A chameleon in winter

Looking at these pictures I feel a bit like a chameleon. The black/white/brown/blue palette i’ve got going on blends in pretty easily with the barren landscape… Thank goodness for those red lips!
I wear this denim shirt shirt often but rarely button it all the way up. I’m a big fan of a plunging neckline, both for aesthetic and comfort, but I guess the button-up bug bit me on this particular day. I was rummaging through my jewelry drawer and found this cutie bow pin. (And by “rummaging” I mean grabbing anything that wasn’t tangled together and swearing a bit. Anyone semi-disorganized with a jewelry drawer knows what I’m talking about!) As far as my other accessories go I’d love to say they were strategically plotted, but my scarves are about as well organized as my jewelry drawer, so I grabbed the first favorite I saw and tied it atop my head.
I pulled the ole ‘wear a dress as a skirt trick’ (is that a thing? I guess it is for me!); I love this dress but it’s sleeveless, and therefore not conducive for a February photo shoot.

Something that’s been getting me through the last bit of winter is my obsession with Spotify. I know I’m the last person on the planet to jump on this train but I’ve had a lot of fun discovering some new music and revisiting lots of old favorites. Suffice it to say, I’ve been spending many nights on the couch with my Spotify and a cat on my lap, and it’s pretty great!

The great unbuttoning

I had this dress on about 15 minutes when I realized why I never wear it to work. It magically unbuttons itself all. the. time. Luckily I wore a black slip thing underneath it because it’s a little see-through so when the buttons popped open at least nothing was seen. Looks like  I should have walked around in it at the store for 10 minutes longer before I bought it. Or just remembered that I need to size up on the button-up dresses to make way for my giant cans! Ha.

I love the grid pattern of this dress. It’s not really stripes, and it’s not really plaid, but somewhere in between. I decided to contrast all the squares with some dots on my legs! It was actually my intention to not wear black and white with a pop of color and this dress is actually the very definition of this. I give up! I love it too much.

In other news, this month for me has been all about baking. It’s not something that I’ve cared for in the past, because I am more of an “oh, I’ll throw some of this in there, and how about some of this?” person when it comes to cooking, and I feel like with baking that’s a game changer and you end up with flat, hard cookies. BUT, it’s kind of refreshing to measure everything out and I’m finding places where you can add a little spontaneity. Last night I made these yummy Salted Caramel Mocha Brownie Cups (although I didn’t make the frosting. I just used the frosting the brownie mix came with and added some caramel on top with some sea salt.) Anyway, I digress. Have a great rest of your week!

La La Love You!

jessi-marlena-combined

Happy Valentine’s Day! We decided to do a combined post this week since we are celebrating our blogiversary, Valentine’s Day and linking up with Fancy Friday!

JESSI

Happy Valentines Day kitties! I love dressing up with a special occasion in mind, so I really had fun putting this outfit together. I pretty much grabbed a bunch of the most girly, lovey-dovey items in my closet, piled them on and voila!
The heart in my hair is actually a shoe clip that Mar handmade me a few years ago for Christmas, and it so happens to double as a super cute hair pin!
I was hoping to unearth some heart tights from the tights abyss in my closet, but when I came across these adorned with bows I was happy to avoid heart overkill.

This dress is a real gem that I actually don’t wear too much. It’s very sheer and therefore not super practical for winter and also hard to pull off in summers sans tights. But this was the purrrfect occasion!

MARLENA

I think I might actually wear this cardigan every Valentine’s Day. I’ve had it forever, it’s warm, and… well, there are hearts on it! It’s a little long and I was losing the shape of my waistline so I decided instead of a belt I’d just tie it up. I love this dress! We actually featured it on our Favorites: Thanksgiving post and Mom got it for me for Christmas! Genius. If it had a been a tad warmer out maybe I would have taken off the cardi so you could have seen the GIANT BOW on it. BOWS! I love ’em.

As a bright-eyed college student I used to hate the commercialism behind Valentine’s Day, it’s owned by Hallmark, blah blah blah. I’ve since given up on all that because once you do, you open your world to presents, a fun date night, and PRESENTS! Joe spoiled me this year with some beautiful diamond earrings, and I spoiled him with a new record player! And tonight Joe’s mom is coming to babysit and we’re going on a lovely little date to Alba for dinner and then who knows what else?

After we finished up our photos for this post, we hit up El Aguila, an amazing Mexican restaurant, for lunch and celebrated our Blogiversary with cupcakes!

My Holiday Outfit Post Holidays

Kitties! I say this is my holiday outfit because I’ve literally worn this dress for every major holiday as of late. Thanksgiving? yep. Jessi & John’s Holiday Party? you got it. Christmas Eve? totally. And I would’ve worn it on New Year’s Eve but we stayed in and I wore pajamas.

I do have to admit I didn’t wear it the same way at any point. This top happened for Jessi & John’s party, and it was a total accident. I was walking out of the door wearing this amazing vintage black velvet bolero and the arm sleeve ripped when I pulled my coat on. Devastated and panicky, I threw this garage sale find on and I am so happy I did! I had never worn it before (proof being Jessi found the $2.99 tag still on it when I arrived) and it was one of those instant gratification pieces.

Mixing sequins on sequins is over-the-top and I love it.

Can we bring back old lady bedazzled tops? Please? I’ve always loved them, but the price tag on most are pretty steep. The only drawback is that they are so delicate and I’m not super…. nice…. to my clothes. Case in point, this top has been leaving little sequins behind, like a graham cracker trail of glitz.

Me & my Miley Cyrus sweater

Now that I work full-time and it’s dark by the time I get home, Jessi and I have been meeting up on Sunday afternoons to take outfit pics. On this particular week we couldn’t, so instead I coerced my coworker/friend Kristen to snap some pics of me outside of our office on a pretty (and snowless) afternoon! Luckily it’s actually kind of pretty around! This may not be the last time this happens.

Kristen mentioned I reminded her of Miley Cyrus in my crazy cat sweater. I’m pretty oblivious about pop culture in general (I have been gaped at when admitting I can’t name one Bieber song) so I didn’t actually know what she meant! But I did find Ms. Cyrus very emotionally singing to a giant cat while in a tiny little cat ensemble on the internetz and I was like, “Oh yes, I am okay with this.” So here it is, kitties! My work-friendly version of honing my inner Miley:

I have been searching for a lovely long, pleated skirt for years. YEARS. I have always wanted a pretty plaid one, but this color is so vibrant and perfect I quickly forgot all about my plaid desires. Big Button Vintage is a shop owned by my pals Jes & Josh. They do Market Day every month and I was lucky enough to go preview everything before the big Black Friday sale and have first picks!

My Miley Cyrus sweater is a crop sweater, and it really works perfectly belted with this high-waisted skirt. Try it out! It beats a cold midriff when it’s 5 degrees out.

Hope you’re staying warm and happy! I have to go get ready for Jessi & John’s big holiday party. Pics soon!

Date Night : Omaha

All right guys, I see 2 things when I look at these here pictures:
1) The look on my face in the first picture says, “I know, I’m SORRY these pictures were taken in a hotel lobby, but I love this dress and was excited for the night out and it was ice storming outside. So this is what we’ve ended up with. And p.s. the hotel lobby patrons did not seem to understand…

And

2) That belt! I’m not even gonna mention it anymore, but it ends up in most outfit pics (accidentally, mind you!) What can I say, it’s part of my fashion soul.

So, truth be told, long sleeved dresses are usually not my thing. I just don’t think they’re the right look for me and I’m not super comfortable in them. And, if we’re gonna get technical, this is a 3/4 sleeved dress, but you get the idea. This dress though, for some reason just works. I actually bought this as an Xmas gift for a friend last year but selfishly decided to keep it (I can’t help myself!) I abstained from taking scissors to the sleeves like I normally would and, as a bonus I don’t have to cover up with a sweater, which is an Iowa miracle!

John and I took an overnight trip to Omaha to see Cults at The Slowdown, which is my favorite Omaha venue. Despite the poor weather we got some solid shopping in, a few yummy meals and a decadent hotel stay. We’re old and married now, so instead of going out for more drinks after the show we went back to the hotel, splurged on a few snacks from the lobby and watched Netflix in bed. And you know what? It was purrrrfect!
